Remote asset visibility helped reduce unnecessary site visits, improve crew safety, and support more proactive maintenance across critical water infrastructure
Hunter Water delivers essential water and wastewater services to more than 500,000 people across the Greater Newcastle region. With critical infrastructure spread across a wide geographic area, maintaining visibility across remote pump stations had become an ongoing operational challenge.
For maintenance teams, asset checks often meant travelling up to 30 minutes each way to inspect equipment in person. These routine site visits consumed time, increased operational costs, and introduced additional safety risks for crews working across a dispersed network.
The challenge was not simply that assets needed monitoring. It was that the existing maintenance model relied heavily on people physically moving between sites to understand what was happening.
Weekly inspections could only provide a snapshot of asset condition. Faults could still develop between visits, and unexpected failures continued to slip through before teams had the opportunity to respond. Hunter Water needed a more proactive way to understand asset health across its network, without relying on crews being on site every day.

Moving from routine checks to real-time visibility
To improve maintenance visibility, Hunter Water deployed MOVUS FitMachine across six critical pump stations as part of a pilot program. The deployment and integration of the MOVUS platform gave the team continuous insight into asset behaviour, helping identify potential issues earlier and providing a clearer view of equipment health across the network.
Rather than depending solely on scheduled inspections, the team could begin using real-time data to guide maintenance activity, prioritise attention, and respond to emerging issues before they became failures.
This changed the role of the maintenance team. Instead of spending time checking assets that may have been operating normally, crews could focus their attention where the data showed something needed investigation. For a wide-ranging network, that shift helped reduce unnecessary travel while improving confidence that remote assets were still being watched.
As Hunter Water Mechanical Engineer Tom Hartigan explained: “The MOVUS technology did wonders keeping an eye on our equipment for us, because we’ve got such a wide-ranging network that we can’t get out to pump stations every day.”
Supporting safer, smarter maintenance decisions
For Hunter Water, the value extended beyond asset monitoring. With remote visibility across critical infrastructure, the team was able to cut back on routine visual inspections, reduce time spent travelling between sites, lower associated safety risks, and shift more focus toward planned and preventative maintenance.
This supported a more efficient maintenance model, where decisions were guided by asset condition rather than inspection schedules alone. The deployment also gave teams a clearer shared view of equipment health. As Hartigan noted: “We’ve now got end-to-end equipment health and condition in the one page on a dashboard for people to use.”
That shared visibility matters in distributed infrastructure environments. When teams can see condition changes earlier, they can respond faster, coordinate better, and make more informed decisions about where maintenance resources are needed most.
By shifting from routine inspection toward continuous asset intelligence, Hunter Water improved visibility across its pump station network and reduced the operational burden of maintaining remote sites.
