Enhancing Operational Continuity at a Food Manufacturing Refrigeration Plant

Food and Beverage
Pakenham, Australia

Earlier visibility into electrical instability helped maintenance teams respond before downtime escalated

At a food and beverage manufacturing site in Pakenham, maintaining refrigeration continuity is critical to protecting production stability and operational uptime. Like many food manufacturing environments, the site relies on a network of continuously operating assets where even short interruptions can create flow-on impacts across production scheduling, product handling, and maintenance response.

To strengthen visibility across these systems, the site deployed MOVUS’s wireless FitPower sensors on key refrigeration assets, including condenser pumps operating within the plant’s refrigeration infrastructure.

The goal wasn’t simply monitoring equipment performance. It was to gain earlier awareness of abnormal operating conditions before they developed into larger operational disruptions.

Detecting abnormal electrical behaviour in real time

After the deployment of MOVUS technology, the MOVUS platform identified a significant spike in electrical current on one of the monitored condenser pumps.

The sudden deviation from normal operating behaviours immediately triggered further investigation. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the refrigeration plant had experienced a substantial power surge which resulted in the pump motor tripping.

While the asset interruption itself was brief, the event highlighted a much larger operational challenge. Electrical instability and transient power events can often occur with little warning, particularly in complex industrial environments where traditional inspections or periodic checks provide limited real-time visibility. By the time issues become obvious operationally, production impact may already be occurring.

In this case, the MOVUS deployment provided immediate awareness that abnormal electrical behaviour had occurred, allowing the team to respond quickly and investigate the underlying case before the situation escalated further.

Supporting faster operational response

With real-time visibility into the event, the site was able to rapidly assess the affected asset, stabilise operations, and begin organising further technical investigation into the source of power disturbance.

Rather than discovering the issue only after a prolonged operational interruption, the maintenance team had immediate context around what had occurred and where attention was required. The event also reinforced the broader value of continuous operational monitoring across critical infrastructure.

For the site, the deployment wasn’t only about detecting a single anomaly. It strengthened asset awareness across the refrigeration system and provided operational teams with greater confidence in identifying abnormal behaviour as it developed.

Improving operational awareness across critical infrastructure

The deployment demonstrated how continuous operational intelligence can help industrial sites identify and respond to abnormal conditions earlier, particularly in environments where uptime and continuity are closely tied to production performance.

Following the event, the site gained:
Earlier visibility into electrical disturbances
Improved awareness of asset operating behaviour
Fast response capability during abnormal events
Reduced risk of extended operational disruption
Greater confidence in proactive maintenance response.

While the incident required further technical investigation, the early alert provided the site with valuable time to act before a more prolonged outage could impact production continuity.
