Aglime Avoids Weeks of Downtime with MOVUS

Early warning helped a small regional team replace an overheating blower before it caused a major shutdown

For Aglime Fertilisers, reliability is critical to keeping production moving. Founded in 1938, Aglime has long supported Australia’s agriculture sector by supplying premium crushed and processed lime. At its NSW operation, the team runs high-quality processing machinery to pulverise lime down to 10 microns before transferring the fine powder into silos.

One asset plays a particularly important role in that process: the lime process blower. If the blower stops, production stops with it.

For a small regional team, that kind of failure can quickly become more than a maintenance issue. It can mean lost production, expensive emergency repairs, and extended disruption while replacement parts, labour and specialist support are coordinated.

Aglime had traditionally relied on hands-on maintenance practices and deep familiarity with the equipment to keep the operation running. But as the team looked for a more proactive way to manage risk across critical machinery, they trialed MOVUS on the mill and blower.

The goal was not to replace the team’s practical knowledge. It was to give them earlier visibility when something started to change.

A warning before the breakdown

Shortly after installation, the MOVUS platform identified an unusual temperature spike on the lime process blower. The alert prompted the Aglime team to investigate further. Using handheld devices, they confirmed the temperature increase and recognised that the blower was overheating.

That early warning gave the team time to act before the issue became a full failure. Further investigation showed that, if left unresolved, the overheating blower could have led to a seized motor or metal fragments spreading through the system. Either outcome had the potential to cause major damage, extended downtime, and a costly repair event.

Instead of waiting for the asset to fail, Aglime replaced the blower with a refurbished unit and sent the faulty one for repair.

From emergency risk to planned response

The difference was timing. Without early warning, the team may have been forced into a reactive repair under far more difficult conditions. The blower could have failed during production, leaving the site exposed to weeks of downtime and six-figure repair costs.

Instead, the issue was resolved with just one day of downtime and as the Aglime General Manager explained: “The MOVUS system detected problems early… It was one day of downtime versus possibly weeks, which would have been very expensive for us. We are just seven blokes in the bush, a few grand has saved us $100,000. For a small team, that’s big!”

Supporting practical maintenance with better visibility

The value of MOVUS in this case was not just detecting an overheating asset. It gave the team confidence to act early, supported the decision with real data, and helped turn a potential emergency breakdown into a controlled maintenance response.

The Aglime team also worked closely with MOVUS support to review the data and determine the best course of action. That support became an important part of the experience, giving the site access to regular communication, scheduled check-ins, and alerts that could be acted on quickly.

The team noted: “Access to the MOVUS team made me happy. They were excellent, regularly talking to me, scheduling a weekly meeting and sending alarms to my phone.” For Aglime, MOVUS helped strengthen maintenance planning while still working alongside the team’s existing site knowledge and experience.

Operational impact by acting on the early warning:

Identify an overheating blower before failure occurred
Confirm the issue with site-based checks
Replace the blower before catastrophic damage
Avoid a potential six-figure repair event
Reduce downtime from potentially weeks to one day
Move toward more controlled, data-informed maintenance planning

For a small regional operation, the result was significant. MOVUS helped Aglime avoid a costly shutdown, protect production continuity, and give the team a clearer way to manage critical equipment before failure forced the decision.
